THE DECADE OF ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY 1990-2000 The Decade of Environmental Literacy was launched by The Rene Dubos Center in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to focus on the need to improve environmental literacy in the schools, in the workplace, and in the community. Highlights included the Dubos Forum Program and the Rene Dubos Environmental Awards. Other highlights of the Decade include: 2000 The publication of the Dictionary of Environmental Literacy published by Marshall Cavendish. This 11 volume set provides environmental information for young people in junior high and high schools across the country. The Rene Dubos Center will launch Earthline -- an innovative environmental news, information, and education web site. Earthline will be a significant work-in-progress to enhance environmental literacy worldwide. 1996 The latest book in the series based on Dubos forums: Population Growth and Environmental Issues, co-edited by Shridath Ramphal and Steven W. Sinding, will be published in September 1996 by Praeger. 1994 In 1994 Houghton Mifflin Company published The Encyclopedia of the Environment -- a unique one volume work conceived and sponsored by the Center and written by key authorities to serve as both a reference guide and source of standardized language on basic environmental terms and concepts, issues and problems for the general reader. 1992 The Decade was the Environmental Literacy Summit organized by the Dubos Center in cooperation with UNEP at United Nations Headquarters in May of 1992 to focus on four major issues confronting the Earth Summit held in Rio. Other Center publications include: Management of Hazardous Agents (two volumes in 1992) and The City As A Human Environment (in 1994) by Praeger Publications. 1990 The World of Rene Dubos: A Collection from his Writings -- organized and edited for the Center by Gerard Piel and Osborne Segerberg, Jr.,and published in 1990 by Henry Holt & Company. |
